Metamorphosis enables a butterfly to emerge through the different stages from eggs, larva pupa caterpillar and finally to a butterfly. Similarly, the soul traverses’ various births till it reaches back to its original pure form.

The Sankhyas believe that the self and organs are all-pervading. When obtaining a new body, the soul and sense organs continue to function from where they left off based on Karma.

The Bauddhas opine that the spirit without organs starts to work in a new body. New senses are created with the new body.

The perspective of the Vaiseshikas is that the mind alone goes to the new body.

The Digambara Jains believe the soul flies away from the old body and descends on the new one just as a bird flies from 1 tree to another.

Views of Vedas on Soul’s Journey After Death

However, the Vedas do not agree with these views. The spirit moves from the body accompanied by the mind, prana, the senses and the five elements.

The soul enters the new body, along with prana. The senses cease to function at the time of death and accompany the soul on its next journey.
