In movies and TV shows ghosts and evil spirits wandering the corridors, appearing suddenly seems all so fascinating. We have often had conversations regarding something spooky that took place in our home or somewhere we were. For kids and adults alike, everyone somewhere wishes to see a ghost although they never admit it. However, we often forget how wrong we are doing. Because this is not something to fool around with. Having said that, in this blog, you will learn how to detect spirits in spirits in your home and what paranormal experts have to say. Let’s get started!
Evil Spirits
Before you proceed to detect evil spirits in your home, you need to understand why do spirits stay in a house or place? Why do they come uninvited? The spirit might just not want to let go of their family as it shares a profound bond with them. In this scenario, as per a paranormal expert, the very idea of leaving family and passing on to the other side where they can’t see them anymore haunts them, and the spirit is yet not ready to accept that reality. Espelliany young children, when they pass on, they want to be in the comfort of their parents. Therefore, children’s spirits don’t leave.
If the person had a sudden death, then the spirit of that person might not even be aware of their demise. They might be feeling as if they are in a dream, and soon they will wake up, and things will fall back in the right place. In many cases of accidents or untimely deaths, the spirits of such people mostly remain. One of the prominent reasons that a paranormal expert thinks of this is that they never found closure. They are usually unaware that they are dead.

In some cases of haunting, the spirit was in such a profound state of confusion when they died that they simply didn’t realize they were dead. This was particularly true of suicides. Many of them, though not all, wandered about without direction, making futile attempts to communicate with the living. This was the case with the person possessing one of a well known paranormal consultant’s client. The spirit who was earlier a man, had killed himself by jumping off a bridge. That spirit could see his body lying in the sand, but the fact of his own death did not make an impression on him. Later, he could not understand why people on the beach did not respond to him.
A particularly sensitive patient of another paranormal consultant friend of mine told of buying an old Victorian house in San Francisco that had a reputation of being haunted. He could discern that there were six spirits, the former residents, and liked having them there. “They’re not hurting anybody and they’re enjoying themselves.”
Often the relatives, unable to bear the loss, deliberately keep the deceased close to them with love and care. The client confessed, “I never let Mother go-she’s with me every day. I can feel her presence in the living room and it’s very comforting.” Is this the right thing to do? No it is not! But then, to each his own!
How to Detect Evil Spirits in Your Home?
In my years as a paranormal expert, I have often come across many cases of evil spirits making a place their home. This is often unwilling on the part of the home-owner. But for a layman, it is impossible to determine if there is a spirit present in the home or not. So, in order to do so, there are certain signs that you must vary of. These signs often point in the direction of evil spirit possession as per a paranormal expert.
In Case of Unexplained Knocks
As a paranormal explorer, I believe that evil spirits often tend to disturb and get the attention of the place that they inhabit. Therefore, they often knock on walls and other objects to let you know they are there. Do these knock have meaning? It can. Sometimes they spell out their names and other times the messages they want to convey. In case of tapping, one tap represents “A,” two “B,” three “C” and so on. In line with this, there are also signals for yes and no. It can be a bid for help or it can just be a play. Sometimes it can be a malicious attempt to frighten the occupants of the mutually shared home.
Cold Spots
If you want to detect evil spirits in your home, one of the prominent signs is cold spots. Paranormal experts say that these cold spots often go unexplained. It is mostly random and it may move around the house. You will feel a sudden temperature drown. Whenever this happens to me, a feel chills running down my spine.
Unusual Happenings Around the House Indicate Evil Spirits
Often when strange things happen in your house, it may be a result of someone trying to get your attention. I’ll narrate to you a story of one such happening which was strange to the core. One of my clients recounted her experience with a spirit. This is what she said, “If I had no idea about ghosts and spirits, I would have probably deduced that I was going insane.”
It was a late autumn night. There was no wind and the silence was not just eerie but deafening in its unique sort of way. My client was sitting in the living room watching the 11 o’clock news when she suddenly heard a loud explosion in her house. Looking for the source of the noise, she went from one room to another. Since everything was as it should be, she became extremely apprehensive. Then she heard water “trickling.” She assumed a water pipe had burst. But then remembered that the explosion didn’t sound like it came from behind the wall. She checked the kitchen sink and her bathroom-and could find nothing out of order. She thought to look into the rarely used guest bathroom.
Why Did This Happen?
As soon as she stepped inside the guest bathroom, she was left stunned. To her horror, she saw the glass shower door shattering! And to make things worse, it kept shattering for forty minutes! The sound she thought was water trickling was the shower door crackling. Realizing nothing ‘normal” could cause that, she immediately thought of spirits. She then became calm–all the anxiety left instantly. She surrounded herself with White Light and went into her bedroom.
I saw her the next day for her regularly scheduled appointment. I placed her under therapy and asked her if it was one of the evil spirits. She described him as a sandy-haired, pleasant man of thirty-four. He had shattered her shower door because it was the only thing, he could do that she could not have explained away. She reasoned that he wanted to attract attention to enlist her help.
Furthermore, she assumed that he had come with her ex-husband, who had spent the afternoon visiting her. Since he wasn’t feeling well, she played her relaxation tape for him. It was at that time that the entity left him and became an uninvited guest in her home.
Moving Objects and Other Unusual Happenings
Many people experience finding their items in places they know they didn’t leave them, myself included. These items might consist of purses, wallets, keys, change, pictures, and really almost anything relatively small. It is quite common for entities to affect lights, TVs, and mobile signals to call attention to themselves or to scare others deliberately.
Although usually, it is not possible for spirits to move heavy objects. However, at times, they are able to manipulate small ones. One person mentioned finding the same teacup and spoon next to the sink every morning. Was a resident spirit having a cup of tea at night? Don’t be frightened if you see something levitate or move. It may be an entity trying to catch your attention. Some are desperately seeking help. They need to have you know that they are there.
One of my acquaintances mentioned how scared she was one specific night. She was a bit into ouija boards and seances. And no, she was not a psychic. It’s one of those cases of people fooling around. She returned late to her apartment after attending a seance held once a year by stage magicians. After setting down, she decided to remove her makeup. As she was doing that, her lipstick began moving erratically around the top of the dressing table.
Her first instinct was that it was an earthquake, therefore, she decided to run out of the house. However, when she turned she saw everything was quiet and nothing was shaking. This was a bit odd for her. Out of nowhere, she started feeling the presence of an uninvited guest. A phone call to her magician friend helped when he explained that the spirit was harmless and needed to be released. After she hung up, she prayed for help and was never disturbed again.
Storytime…
One of my clients, who also was a medium, was often exposed to evil spirits. Since our last therapy session, when she came back again, she told me of a harrowing experience she had had. As she was making a second trip into her kitchen from the car, unloading groceries, her feet slipped on shattered glass. Looking down, she saw fragments of a large lighting fixture that had been knocked off the ceiling and had crashed onto the counter near her first bag of groceries. It had smashed into hundreds of slivers. Because of the timing of the event, it seemed obvious to her that the entity wanted to attract her attention, but not to harm her.
In our session, we discovered that this was not one of the evil spirits but that of a prostitute. Unfortunately, while serving a customer, she was stabbed to death in a motel room. And this had taken place in the recent past. So, after bringing my client out of hypnosis, we further investigated this. To our surprise, we saw the news, not more than two-three months old along the same lines. This entity had been one of many prostitutes murdered by a former policeman, who hid their bodies in oil drums. She wanted revenge! In our next session, we talked her into leaving with loved ones towards and into the white light. This same client, on other occasions, reported small plants being knocked off a living room table and the lights and TV turning on and off.
An interesting case involved a mischievous, male, teenage spirit who had lived with the children of one family, accompanied them into the home of their young friends, and then decided to stay there. He went to work the next day with the father and caused havoc by turning switches and endangering lives! This continued for several days until the employee was asked by his boss to keep his “tagalong” at home-or else! Fortunately, the entity got the message!
Strange Behaviour of Animals
Family pets can be extremely perceptive and responsive to earthbound entities as per a paranormal expert. You may find them bristling and staring at something that you don’t see. Your dog may growl, snarl, bark or run with its tail between its legs. Your cat may spit, every hair straight up with a full stiff tail. When spirits are in the house, the pet may refuse to enter a room, or slink around comers, “checking things out.”
Pets, in this case, are a lot like children, obviously can’t just dismiss something as “not real” simply because you say it isn’t. Plus, they too are just so innocent that they tap in without meaning to. Additionally, they have the added ability to see, hear, sense, and experience on a much different level and frequency than we humans do. I’ll use my example of a dog whistle to drive that point home.
For us humans, the dog whistle is so out of our frequency range that we hear nothing. Yet, the pet reacts immediately and strongly. Scientifically we know they smell, hear, and see better than we do. Now, we only need to accept that everything they see, hear, and sense doesn’t have to be in the same realm as we operate in either.
Seeing Spirits
The universe is physical in nature and matter is all around us. For a ghost or evil spirits to manifest and show itself, it must have a lot of energy. The energy has to be dense and high in order for the spirit to manifest itself in a heavier form. This is the reason why seeing a spirit is really uncommon. The energy required for this is immense and it does not happen regularly. Or rather most entities do not have the requisite energies in them to manifest. The energy I am talking about is emitted from multiple sources. So, there are different sources of energy involved in this.
To collect the energy from so many sources becomes really difficult as the availability is less in most cases. However, energy from humans, water, and batteries are sometimes available. The energy can also come from a source that is electrical in nature. We know that electricity has a lot of energy on offer and a spirit might use the energy to manifest itself. To subject that energy into becoming something apparent also requires a lot of energy hence it becomes really difficult to see a spirit fully manifest itself. This is why seeing a spirit is extremely rare. However, if you do see shadows or unexplained people who blurred out into the horizon, you know what it is.
It is Very Real
Clients reported seeing shadows moving or people who seemed very real. Paranormal experts believe that this is very rare. Sometimes this happened only when they were alone, but on other occasions, evil spirits were seen by several people. Others told of being awakened from a sound sleep to see a person at the foot of their beds. Even when they recognized deceased loved ones, many were terrified and rudely ordered them to leave immediately. If the intruder looked menacing, it was especially frightening.
A patient mentioned to a fellow paranormal expert that when he woke up, he saw a man with a black, charred face staring at her. She panicked and screamed-and he departed. Later, she and her sister figured out that the spirit was someone they had come to know about when they visited their dying father in the hospital. They had comforted the family of a young man who was in a coma, badly burned and fatally injured from a motorcycle accident. After his death, he apparently accompanied my patient to her home. Once she realized who he was, she understood how unwarranted her panic had been. She talked to the paranormal entity and he left.
Being Touched by Evil Spirits
Spirits can touch people. Have you ever felt something like cobwebs across your face? Or a cold caress? Sometimes these are strong enough to be considered a push or a light hit. Don’t be alarmed. Remember, they cannot harm you. It could be a loved one trying to let you know he or she is there. Notice how often living people touch each other, even giving friendly punches at times.
Ghosts do touch to make their presence felt. It could be just for fun, or they are trying to establish a line of communication with you. There is not always malice involved. Even I have had few experiences with paranormal entities touching me. The first time, I hysterically blurted out to never touch me again, and she didn’t. Yes, that was a female spirit. Therefore, understand that even with spirits, you can set certain physical boundaries. Thus, if you can’t get rid of them entirely, you often can reach an agreement and peacefully co-exist, provided you’re so inclined. And believe me, we’ve done that in a few places.
Often physical sensations follow whispering as one of the signs of haunting activity. And I have been experiencing them a lot across my career in the paranormal arena. When you get into their space, It feels as though someone is watching you at all times. The feeling that makes chills run down the spine. You may feel a presence behind you. As if someone is standing behind your back and looking over your shoulder.
Hearing Spirits
Whispering and hearing spirits is among the first signs, and it was true in my case too. Whispering voices were the first introduction I had to the spirit world. Then again, these voices are not intelligent ghosts who can communicate clearly. They are mostly muffled voices that make no sense whatsoever. At this juncture, it is important to clarify that voices come much later on in a haunting. Besides, that’s proven to usually not be the case at all.
Years ago, I awakened from deep sleep to hear my name being called. It sounded like a voice in the room, definitely not thought within my own head. Since then, my patients and friends have told me of hearing voices-usually addressing them by name, delivering messages or asking for help.
If you suspect there is a spirit in your home, you can do a bit of detective work and set up your tape recorder with a blank tape and a timer for late at night, and you might find a message the next morning. If it is voice-activated, better still. Spirits have been recorded, and there are references to this in the bibliography.
The sounds feel like coming from different people. It is quite distinct in that sense. Understand that it is distinctive in terms of someone (or more) whispering but not in terms of what they are whispering. The conversation feels fast-paced. You can make out that, presumably via tone and inflexion. Yet, it can go on for several seconds and minutes. Therefore, from my experience whisperings are totally unmistakable haunting signs.
Smelling Spirits
Sometimes spirits can be detected by odours as per a paranormal expert. The most common is a specific type of perfume, cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco. These smells often help people to recognize their “guests.” A paranormal expert believes that this may be a sign of a visiting relative. For example, if your mother is on the “other side” and you notice her favourite fragrance, it may be that she is either visiting you or trapped in the physical world without a body. Entities who are not earthbound but just dropping in to pay a visit may deliberately bring their identifying scents so that you will know them.
However, evil spirits and demons, who have not left the earth plane occasionally have odours accompanying them. As per a paranormal expert, this often feels and smells like rotting flesh. However, my clients have reported medicinal smells, for example, ones that reminded them of their parents’ hospital rooms. Others reported smelling their father’s favourite pipe tobaccos or mothers’ colognes.
One of the Easiest Ways
The smell is one of the easiest and most powerful ways for a ghost to communicate with us. Although this wasn’t the first thing that I noticed in my paranormal experience, it was very prominent. However, at this moment, it is very common for me to experience smells. In fact, it’s often one of the most obvious and frequent manifestations many report experiencing. Today, when I’m working with a client I often smell cigars, perfumes, favourite flowers, and even flowers that represent the spirit’s name who is trying to get through.
Ghosts can and do often manifest smells in much the same way spirits can. This is why this is also among the signs of haunting activity. Therefore, if you’re trying to discern if there’s a ghost in your house, try to avoid wearing cologne till you notice a pattern. Instead, take down the smell volume by even turning off scent dispensers. Also, don’t spray room freshener, smoke, wear anything with too much fabric softener smell, or even use breathy mints or suck on lozenges. Most definitely, don’t cook anything. In other words, make your house smell as bland as it possibly can for a night or two. That way, you can start from a clean slate in order to detect the smell.
My advice to you
Please remember that any physical or emotional discomforts a person experiences can mostly be due to various diseases or emotional conditions he or she is going through. I have seen that majority of cases do not involve paranormal activity of any kind. Paranormal events are extremely rare occurrences. Hence your problems should be first brought to the notice of a qualified medical practitioner. I have often seen that the line between borderline personality disorders or other psychiatric disorders and “spirit possession” is thin. Hence a good paranormal investigator should advise his clients that professional medical care is the first solution or remedy for any physical or emotional discomfort.
Remember, you need to be a sceptic first to develop into a paranormal investigator. You need to rule out every single scientific possibility that is known to mankind to identify anything that is paranormal. Hence travel through the path of modern science, explore and unravel all facts using data and what cannot be explained through science is what we need to explore more through the paranormal arena. Most of your clients may feel desperate due to whatever they are going through. It’s your duty to act responsibly. Guide them through the path of modern science. Refrain from being a doctor or healer. There are qualified medical practitioners out there who can do their job well. Avoid any forms of advice on religious or cultural rituals or for that matter any ritualistic practices.
